Rehoboth Weekender 2007

Monday, February 26, 2007

On Friday night we boarded a train bound for the south of Namibia. The train goes all the way down south and stops near the South African border. The complete trip would take approx. 14hrs. Luckily, going only to Rehoboth, our trip was only a two hour one. The train left an hour late for no apparent reason. We just sat on board in the station without being told what the delay was.

Waiting for the train, wandering around the antique trainyard.

Funkey.

This is one mean looking train.

We had a compartment booked so that we would not have to sit in the caboose. The bunks were basic but well worth the extra couple of dollars. Bringing along a sleeping bag would enable you to get some winks on board. I would consider it for a trip to the coast or to the north. Yes, these trains go in all directions (although not very quickly) and an overnight trip to the coast could be fun.

We had a little dining table by the window and the ladder there goes up the top bunk. The compartment sleeps up to six people! It was so nice having the window open and cruising through the wilderness. If was pitch black, no moon, very few stars, so not much could be seen but the silouettes of the mountains in the distance was breathtaking.

We arrived at Kimera's friend's house late Friday night. All houses are marked as such in Rehoboth. There are similar markings in neigborhoods around Windhoek. The family's last name was not Toontjies, and I don't know what ERF means. The sign itself may have been from times past.

Typical neigborhood in Rehoboth. I love the tall trees! They were everywhere. It was really, really hot here. Note that the ground is nearly all sandy. Only major roads were paved and the rest were sand.

Looking up towards the main street.

To be continued....

Weekend Get-away to the South

Friday, February 23, 2007

I'm off to the Rehoboth Spa Hot Springs Resort for the weekend. Interesting thing about this trip is that we will be taking the train to get to our destination. Last time I took the train we were on our way to the Christmas 2005 staff party. It was very, very slow! Actually, at times we were actually going backwards for some reason! (Don't ask me why)

Will be hitting a birthday party in nearby Rehoboth Saturday night. It should be a very interesting weekend!!

Swakopmund February 2007

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

A lone surfer surveys the waves. We watched him for a bit, but he never actually did any surfing. Just sort of stood there staring at the waves.

At Dune 7 we could not even get out of the car! It was so windy! I have actually never felt wind so strong. It came across the desert from the East. I did get out of the car at one point but was literally lifted off my feet. I ran back to the car which was also being shaken by the wind!!!

Spectacular sunset from the pier at the Tug. We had another great dinner of fresh seafood.

This is a rarity. I found a mouse playing with a cat. Moreso, a cat playing with the mouse. The cat was not trying to eat the mouse but just pawing it around. We watched them for a good 10 minutes. It was tempting to help the mouse out by scaring the cat away, but we felt it best not to interfere with the natural order of things. I know this cat to be one of many strays that live outside of the Tug restaurant. Presumably, they get handouts from the restaurant to survive.

My new friend Joey from the United States. Joey comes from Phoenix, Arizona so is used to the kind of desert environment found in Namibia. He says that alot of the sights seen here are very close to those seen back home. Although the dunes against the Atlantic Ocean are a real rare sight.

Nice Restaurant and Bar

Monday, February 12, 2007

After the fashion show Friday night, we wound down at the Nice restaurant for some drinks. Nice is a favorite spot of mine. Recently they opened a rooftop suishi bar, making it the second suishi bar in Windhoek. This also means that I have fresh high quality suishi not 5 minutes from my door. This is truly...nice!

Kimera and Talita showing us what nice is really about.

Kimera and I relaxing in the lounge.

High Fashion Namibian Style

Local designers presented a Valentines Fashion Show to showcase Namibian design and music. I had a few friends in the show so was obliged to attend. Really glad I did though, it was a great mix of people, music, and awesome designs.

Ngutti Fruit after their initial performance. They only got to perform a couple of songs inside so they took the intermission as an opportunity for an impromptu show.

Lady Mae wowed the crowds with her eccentric style and attitude.

The last performer was also an organizer for the show. We had to give it up for her.

Going to the Coast!

Friday, February 09, 2007

Internet has been really bad here so I have not had a chance to upload any recent pictures. It keeps timing out on me! Frustrating, as it has been a busy week. I will try again early next week.
Heading to the coast for the weekend!

Lazy Day at the Pool

Monday, February 05, 2007

Back at the pool last weekend. I was in fantastic company!

These two little ones were having lunch at the pool with their family. They took this (purple?) rice dish and trotted off to share it together. Eating with their hands and sharing it with each other was quite a scene!

Blood Diamond

Well worth the trip to the theatre! Is it still in the theatres in Canada? I really enjoyed this movie from start to finish. Leonardo plays a very convincing 'boerkie' or Afrikaner. He reminded me very much of someone I know here who is also from Zimbabwe or the old Rhodesia. I saw this movie with Romeo from work, his wife, and Kimera, she cried four times throughout the movie. Very emotional scenes.
