Approaching Portland we could see Mount Hood looming in the background.  The mountains in the western United States are vastly different from the ranges we have up in British Columbia, they are volcanic so rise up and stand alone.  Its remarkable to see a 3,000+ metre mountain tower over the the landscape.  Both Seattle and Portland have mountains like this within sight of the city.

After settling into Portland we took the drive out to Mount Hood along the banks of the Columbia River.  We stopped at Multnomah Falls a 190 metre glacial waterfall, drove through the winelands surrounding Mount Hood, and then explored the mountain.  Remarkably there were still people using the mountain for snowboarding even in July.
